South Africa managed to pull out a ticket to the knockout stage by finishing second in Group A with 4 points. They lost 2:0 against a strong Mexico side, drew 1:1 against Czechia, and then beat South Korea 1:0. The last win was incredibly important to extend their tournament life, but their overall level across the group stage was not fully convincing and left questions about their ability to compete with top-tier nations. Adding to their challenge, South Africa will miss crucial attacking midfielder Themba Zwane (47/12), who is sidelined due to suspension. On a positive note, midfield anchor Teboho Mokoena is back and available after serving his own suspension. Canada finished second in Group B, also with 4 points. They drew 1:1 against Bosnia-Herzegovina, thrashed Qatar 6:0, and then lost 2:1 against Switzerland. While the defeat against the Swiss was a minor setback, Canada still showed much more attacking quality and fluidity in their group stage matches, racking up an impressive 8 goals in three games. Canada will be missing central midfielder Ismael Kone (38/4) to injury, and Stephen Eustaquio (56/4) remains a heavy fitness doubt. However, the potential return of Alphonso Davies—after missing the group stage entirely—could provide a massive boost to their setup. Canada boasts a very strong team for this level. The attacking quartet of Jonathan David, Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan, and potentially Davies gives them immense speed, goal-scoring threat, and individual quality. They play with significantly more rhythm and verticality than South Africa, as evidenced by their high tournament goal tally. While South Africa undoubtedly improved in their decisive match against South Korea, they did not convince across all three of their group matches. With Canada acting as tournament co-hosts and possessing vastly more quality in the attacking third, I definitely see the North Americans dictating the tempo here. The overall intensity and individual firepower speak in favor of Canada, who should be seen as clear favorites to bypass the Africans and secure their spot in the Round of 16.
